The Easter Bunny and Christ on the Cross: What’s the Connection?

I was driving through Hamburg when I seen this...

Image via Wikipedia

Don’t be ashamed to say that you’re baffled. Everyone would be. If you happen to be a church-goer, the obvious underlying fact about Easier is this: it was the day Christ Jesus rose from the dead after dying on the cross for our sins. Little did us church-goers know that Easter also meant something else — a story about a stately hare, sometimes wearing clothes (like the fabled Puss n’ Boots), carrying a basket of eggs.

Eggs? Since when did Easter get to be about eggs? Painted eggs? Baskets? No one gets it; don’t deny it.

The fact is this, though; surprisingly, there is a connection between the two holidays, albeit probably a connection that was unintentional. First off, you have to understand that Christ rising from the dead was essentially a ‘rebirth.’ Ask yourself this important question: what is Spring to you?

That’s right: it’s about a ‘rebirth.’ The leaves grow back, the flowers grow back, typically animals go through mating season, which means new life enters the world. And speaking of new life, why is it that we end up talking about a hare or ‘Easter Bunny’ as it were? Simple.

Rabbits are known to multiply quite easily during the Springtime. That is, in fact, their mating season. It’s no wonder that in some religions the ‘hare’ is a symbol of fertility. Moreover, take one look at the egg (which should spark some more confusion as to why a bunny rabbit is carrying around a bunch of chicken eggs!). That’s a symbol of ‘life.’ Of new beginnings.

Tie that in with the concept of Christ, and it might make more sense to you. One thing’s for sure, though — you’d never catch the good ol’ Easter Bunny traveling to Nazareth just so Jesus could get a few Cadbury’s from the basket! The Three Kings already took care of his gifts anyway.
